Studies in the Deeper Life

Lesson 9 (Questions 5)

The Sense Ruled Mind

  1. Explain Roman 12:1, 2 Read

  • Define a Sense ruled mind.
  • The Book of Romans, written by the Apostle Paul and the “Theme of Romans” is the Revelation of God’s wrath against sin and Righteousness, through Faith, as the grounds of Justification. The act by which God moves a willing person from the state of sin (injustice) to state of Grace (justice) or moving from a state of sin to Righteousness.
  • The first eleven chapters of this book explains: Ch 1 Our Calling; Ch 2 Ungodliness is inexcusable; Ch 3 Jews and the Gospel; Ch 4 Justification by Faith; Ch 5 Results of Justification by Faith; Ch 6 Salvation; Ch 7 Old relationship to sin, New relationship to God; Ch 8 Deliverance from sin and the Law explained; Ch 9 Israel and God’s Sovereignty; Ch 10 Ignorance and rebellion; Ch 11 Israel’s present state, blinded through rebellion; provoked to jealousy by the Christian Church and God’s warning to us, the Gentiles, the consequences, of not continuing in His Goodness; future Salvation of Israel. Ch 12, therefore…….
  • After elaborating on the things God has done for us, Apostle Paul is directing us to do precipitate and put into action his directive to us. Chapter twelve begins and turns practical by saying, Therefore after God has done all this for us, we are to give ourselves to Him a living sacrifice- a walking “Body of WORSHIP”, John 4:24.
  • Worshippers 1 Pet 2:9, bringing sacrifices to God, we have become Priests, giving our bodies as a Living Worship to a Holy God, as a Holy Sacrifice, in Worshipping, walking, talking, eating sleeping, singing, praising, in marriage, vocation etc….… that is the content of Chapters 1-11.
  • Old Testament Priests gave dead sacrifices-animals. The difference today, God is asking for our bodies, as we are the New Testament sacrifice.  We are the Priests, who place ourselves on the Altar every moment of every day.  Romans makes us Priests, who can present to God, the Father ourselves.  Never by what we see, feel, taste, smell, etc…., movies, games, eating, or thoughts of a unrepentent heart.  But by being Holy and separated unto God, which is our reasonable service.
  • The Christian life is a life of Worship. That is the giving of ourselves, continually and Our mind set must be not what we can get from God, but what we can give to God. Our bodies must become a living sacrifice to God. 2 Cor 8:5. This is the duty of all the brethren and sisteren.
  • 1 Thess 5:23 Sanctify in the Greek (to make Holy, separate, distinct, to set apart for God’s special use and purpose in this world). Sanctify in Hebrew (dedicate, prepare, appointed, purified, to set apart for sacred purpose; to be free from sin).
  • There are Four elements in a Living sacrifice as stated below:
    • Spirit of Man – Ps 51:10 The spirit of man is intellect, will, mind, conscience and other invisible faculties, that makes him a free moral agent and rational being. Both the soul and the spirit of man are immortal.  They are so closely related that it is hard to distinguish the finest details of difference.  But there is a difference between them.  The spirit is he that knows 1 Cor 2:11 and the soul is that which feels Jobs 14:22. Both makes the inner man which leaves the body at death.
    • Soul of Man – life; soul or spiritual part in contrast to the material body. It also retains the shape and size of its living owner.  The soul is the seat of desires, feelings, passions, appetites and emotions.  The soul is immortal.
    • Body of Man – Is the house of man’s soul and spirit and goes back to the dust again at death. Gen 3:19 and becomes immortal at Resurrection 1 Cor 15:54-58.  The sensed ruled body must see, feel, taste, smell, John 20:24-29.
    • Will – Romans 7

  • If our bodies or our hearts or any part of us are in sin, God does not hear our Songs Amos 5:21-24 – stop your songs (Praise and Worship). Romans 6:12 – do not let sin reign in your body, that you v13, presenting your members, v 16 same thing.  V 19 presents yourself as righteous. Soul first, then Body.  I urge you to present a Body Holy.
  • Only a Ps 51:17, A broken spirit and a contrite heart, the Living Sacrifice must be possessed before God accepts them as an offering.
  • Ps 141:1-2 may my prayer be as an incense to You, Oh God!!
  • Romans 12:1 I Paul, beseech (call you aside, make an appeal in view of certain facts, come with some practical request) Brethren, by the Mercies (What Mercies??)
  • What Mercies have been given to me undeserved, credit or applied to me, that I owe my Body???
  • Salvation defined is the Mercy of God – And everything that is a part of SALVATION with all of its components. Romans 1:16; 10:1; 10:9, 10. AS SEEN BELOW:

  • Divine Love – Ch 1:7 -Eternal love from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  • Grace – Provided Salvation to an unearned sinner from God the Father and Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Ch 1v7 and Ch 3,4,5,6 and on and on.

  • Holy Spirit – Sheds love, secures us Ch 8

  • Peace – Ch 1:7; Ch 2, 5, 8 ……… Talk about peace with God, granted to us as a Mercy from God.

  • Faith – Roman 1:17; 4:12; 4:17-20; 5:2; 9:30; 10:6, over 20 times is Faith mentioned and granted to us to believe His Word, to walk in His Way, for victories, healing, deliverance etc...

  • Comfort – Ch 1:12

  • Power – Ch 1:16

  • Hope – 4:18; 5:1-5; 8:24-25

  • Patience – Ch 5:3-4; 8:25; Forbearance 2:4; 3:25

  • Goodness – Ch 2:4

  • Sharing in His Glory – Ch 2, 5, 8, 9

  • His Honor – Ch 2:9-10

  • Righteousness – “Theme” Ch 1- 11 again and again is imputed to us 3:10; 5:7

  • Forgiveness – Ch 4 throughout the Ch

  • Reconciliation – Ch 5 throughout the Ch

  • Justification – 15x Declared before God as Just

  • Security forever – Ch 5 and 8. Secure before God forever

  • Eternal life - 2:7; 5:21; 6:23

  • Freedom from Sin – 6:18,22

  • Sonship – 8:14-19

  • Resurrection – 6:5

  • Ongoing Intercession – By the Spirit and the Son – 8:26-34

  • V 11:30-32 concluded the list by Paul over the Mercies of God

  • This is the motive for us to make our bodies a living sacrifice Holy and acceptable to God which is our reasonable service.

  • Ps 116:12 – What must I render to God for all His Mercies? YOUR BODY!!!!!! Your life has these components and more. It all starts with the Soul (Faith in Jesus) must be first, then the Body must be presented.  The “present” is a Temple term.  It means to give whole heartly and hold nothing back. Like a Priest bringing the Lamb to the Altar.  You lay the entire thing down.  That is what Romans 12 is saying, Present. As a living body, a holy body continually. For His use and pleasure, set apart.  Romans 6:12 – do not let sin reign in your body, that you v13, presenting your members, v 16 same thing.  V 19 presents yourself as righteous. Soul first then Body.  Paul is saying, “I urge you to present your Body Holy”.

7 Commands concerning the Body in the Book of Romans:

  • Yield it to God – Romans 12:1-6; 6:13-20

  • Make it a living sacrifice – Romans 12:1

  • Make it acceptable to God – Romans 12:1

  • Reckon it to be dead to sin – Romans 6:11

  • Reckon it alive to God – Romans 6:11

  • Refuse slavery to sin – Romans 6:12

  • Mortify its deeds – Romans 8:13

  • 1 Thess 4:4 – Abstain from your – 1 Cor 9:24. The Body cannot do what ever it wants to do.

  • God wants your body wholly as well as your spirit. It’s an act of demand.

  • We must place ourselves on the Altar and stay on the Altar, not come down.

  • It is our responsible (reasonable, show sound judgement) – Real Worship is the giving of your soul and Body to God.

  • The mind must be given to God, for the body to stay. You may give you body to God and not your mind, after a while your body will begin to follow your mind.  So as a man thinketh in his heart so is he.  Prov 23:7

  • Romans v2 do not be conformed to this world (age) but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind. The mind must come with the body.  If we do not reprogram our minds, the body will jump right down off that Altar.  The mind is critical.  The world has filthy thoughts, opinions, fashions, ideas, speculations, aim, aspirations, temptations, etc…  All the things we see in this world have become the spirit of this age or the System.  Our bodies are not to look like, connect, strengthen, adapt to, share in or conform to its ways.  It is an overwhelming power, satan uses to promote his agenda.  Our body displays whether we are his or God’s.

  • We must make sure our minds are not absorbed with the way of the world’s way of thinking and living. That body cannot be presented to God as a living sacrifice.

  • 1 John 5:19 – the entire world lieth in wickedness. The lust of the flesh and the pride of life are all passing away.  Its all satanic, all the spirit of darkness, satan controls.

  • We have been bought out of that kingdom into His marvelous light. Now we are to present our bodies a living sacrifice unto God.

  • To remain a living sacrifice we must continually renew our mind with the Word of God. That is a very challenging thing to do.

  • The average high school student spends an average of 9 hours in front of a computer screen. Their minds are being renewed and drawn in by the spirit of the age (world).  The Bible says, stop letting yourselves be drawn in by this evil world.

  • Be transformed into – metamorphosis, by the renewing, reprograming of your minds. Romans 8:7; 8:27; 12:2

  • Who we are, should come from Heaven, not this world or hell.

  • How? 1 Cor 2:16 – The mind of Christ; Col 2:18

  • There is no short cut to this. After Salvation, the mind begins to battle with the world through sight, feel, touch, smell and taste.

  • Phil 2:5 Mind of Jesus! Deut 17:6

  • WILL – Romans 7. I do what I don’t want to do!! My Will must be on display by action.

  • His Will is always good.

  • To be a Living Sacrifice, one must possess a strong desire, generated by one’s will, based upon, what the mind knows of the Word of God, which informs what the Body does, all in gratitude for the Mercies of God, granted graciously to us in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The Body controlled by and unrenewed mind cannot be presented to God as a sacrifice.
